Description
         The Buffalo Public School (BPS) system consistently puts forth significant effort in helping all students succeed through achievement of a high school diploma. Despite the BPS system’s greatest efforts, there remain some students who are unable to achieve this goal due to a variety of factors. Furthermore, there remains a sub-population of these students who are unknowingly close to obtaining a high school credential due to having completed at least some of the regents credits required for a high school equivalency diploma. The Buffalo Urban League Inc.’s You Only Live Once (YOLO) program is interested in analyzing data related to this particular group of students in order to develop a plan for increasing its impact with this population throughout Buffalo.
         The YOLO program provides out-of-school-youth with an array of serves aimed at providing assistance with completion of the New York State high school equivalency diploma. YOLO serves youth who are facing a variety of barriers in achieving educational and/or career pathway success. These barriers may include dropping out of school, difficulty maintaining or gaining long-term employment, being basic skills deficient, involvement with the criminal justice system, and more. One of the unique outcomes of the program is its high success rate in helping youth to overcome these barriers and achieve long-term success through fulfillment of their individual goals.
          In accordance with the description of the program as described, a formal data request is being submitted in order to evaluate how Buffalo’s population of high school drop-outs can be better served through YOLO. Our organization is looking to analyze data on the number of students who have dropped out of high school over the past three years (2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019). It is also requested that any data on how many of these students have any Regents Examination credits completed be provided. If possible, we also request data on the sum of students who have obtained Regents Examination credits at various degrees (for example, how many students have one credit, how many students have two credits, etc.). Data on any referrals made to students upon drop-out and, if available, any data on what they are currently doing is also significant in our evaluation efforts, thus any data on these factors is also requested at this time. As mentioned, YOLO plans to utilize the requested data in order to calibrate its efforts in order to better serve members of the community who have dropped out of high school within the past three years, particularly those who have already obtained some of the required Regents Examination credits.
